More time reading on Instagram has led to discovering clothing combinations to attempt - here are the easiest outfits to give a shot this winter.
It turns out we all prefer loungewear, a lot. According to purchasing portal Liketoknow.it, loungewear searches are up by 1000% since lockdown 1.0 started, indicating comfort triumphs at the time. The trouble is however, there’s only so many times you can wear the same – perhaps coffee-stained – grey hoodie and joggers, right? We’re not forgetting about them totally (how could we after they’ve been with us for so long) but occasionally it’s wonderful to put on a daily wardrobe that doesn’t entail an elasticated waist and a drawstring.
Not only have we been spending more time browsing online for loungewear, but we’re also sure most people would agree that screen time has risen. If you have an iPhone, it will be sending you updates on how long you’ve been looking at your device — we bet a huge amount is on social media. We’re all guilty of it, but we may feel less guilt if it’s for ‘research’.
Instagram is a go-to for clothing inspiration – along with food, homeware, and beautiful pets – and we want to show you some winter ensembles that are simple to try out. Just follow these basic wardrobe formulas below.

1. KNIT VEST + SHIRT
Unless you’ve been taking a sabbatical from checking social media applications, you will most certainly have spotted the knit vest that’s been finding its way into the wardrobes of smart ladies everywhere. Spotted on the autumn/winter catwalks at the likes of Prada and Dior, they swiftly flowed down to the high street and smaller retailers.
The ‘grandpa’ knit has achieved new sartorial heights this year — not only is the pull-over style still going strong, but the knitted waistcoat with buttons is also joining the comfortable company. So, how do you wear the vest? Of all, winter asks for layers so count on the shirt to offer you the sleeves chilly days ask for. We’ll let some of Instagram’s inhabitants show you how it’s done.
The knit vest was huge news in the 70s and fashion influencer Hodan explains how to keep it somewhat retro by matching it with a vintage patterned shirt. Giving pre-loved pieces another breath of life by blending them with current trendy products (the vest) is a terrific approach to designing an ensemble at all times.
Going for a snug, cropped vest instead of some of the bigger ones going the rounds is a way to make it seem more sophisticated. We love how the high/low suit is a blend of fitted and baggy forms with chunky shoes and traditional accessories.
If you’re not ready for a skirt throughout winter attempt this top combo with straight-leg jeans and white sneakers. Trust us, it works.
Embracing the full preppy vintage mood of the knit vest, creative consultant Trine mixes a deep V-neck design with a Ganni patterned shirt. On paper, this doesn’t seem like it would work, yet IRL (you can see for yourself) it somehow works. It’s all about accepting the reality your dress is going to make a statement.
Mixing clashing hues, and designs and weaving in micro trends like as giant ruffles is never going to be a wallflower moment. In typical Scandi flair, Trine adds further accents to the ensemble with leather pants. If you want to take it one step at a time, tone it down and opt for a neutral knit over a soft patterned shirt instead. Either way, adding a knit vest to a shirt is the winter layered style you’re going to see more of.

2. SHORTS + KNEE-HIGH BOOTS
If you’ve been working from home, baring your legs after months inside doesn’t seem too attractive, but shorts for winter are a thing. The autumn/winter catwalk saw Vera Wang combine shorts with thigh-high stockings and platform heels, while Marc Jacobs opted for longer Bermuda variants dressed as a sleek suit.
Take inspiration from the catwalk but adjust the style with the Instagram way to wear the traditionally summer-only item: fitted shorts + knee-high boots. Making the combo even more wearable, the knee-high boots of appeal are flat, thick, and comfy.
Fashion influencer Emmanuelle explains just how to make shorts winter ready. Items may work hard in your wardrobe throughout all seasons as long as you get layering correctly. Of course, in summer you could wear these fitted neutral shorts with a cami top and sandals but for winter, they require more consideration.
A roll-neck knit should already be in your capsule wardrobe and you can understand why. Adding a comfortable sense to short shorts, when combined with a maxi coat they take on a whole new mood. To refine the appearance, it’s all about footwear. The thick tread knee-high boot is part of the stomper gang and they’ve been granted the complete mark of approval for usefulness, style, and comfort.
For the Marc Jacobs approach of wearing shorts, turn to Bermuda. A somewhat longer length short, this design will reveal less leg so it’ll be more weather-appropriate for extra chilly days. The idea is to make sure they’re fitted and sophisticated — like Renia, above – instead of basketball player-Esque jersey pairings.
Keep the appearance polished by wearing a flat knee-high boot and move them directly into winter territory with a bulky sweater. Tights are also an alternative - designer slogan pairs from Chanel and Burberry have been crucial this season. Of course, a pair of black tights will also do the trick.

3. COLLARED JUMPER + LEATHER TROUSERS
It may be because we’ve gotten used to dressing from the waist up for video chats and meetings, but elaborate collars have made an impression. Focusing on the neckline, they’ve been added to everything from dresses and blouses to knitwear. That’s true, the collared jumper is the trendy update on the polo top this season.
Adding a fresh edge to traditional knitwear shapes, when coupled with sumptuous leather (real or fake) pants they get lifted to new dreamlike heights. Take notice from Instagram’s best on how to wear one of the simplest – but most effective – winter clothing formulae.
Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has just described @abimarvel as one of the greatest Instagram accounts to follow, and rightfully so.
The account by creative director Abisola Omole is a destination for both fashion and interiors. And of course, Abi was ready to test out the collared knit and leather pants style in top-to-toe Violeta from Mango.
Proving a basic design frequently prevails, you could also try putting the collared knit over a roll neck shirt with track sole stomper boots for outside of the home.
Backing up our argument with the stomper boots, fashion influencer Eva is effortless in a French Connection collared pullover and fake leather pants. A simple option to wear this outfit is by keeping the jumper out or sizing up for an oversized laid-back attitude.
When it comes to spring, switch to leather or suede shorts with sandals for a method to wear knitwear throughout all seasons. All hail the new collared knits, we believe they’ll remain around for the long haul.
